I didn’t ‘apply and hope.’ I spent months networking internally, learning the craft, and showing ClickUp I was serious, so when the Enterprise BDR role opened up, I was already the top candidate.

I’d been at ClickUp for almost five years and promoted four times in technical support, ending up as a Technical Impact Manager embedded with engineering teams. But I hit a ceiling unless I moved into leadership, and with two kids in California, I needed a path with real financial upside. After a career advice conversation with a family member who’s a VP at Salesforce, I started researching tech sales, realized how many AEs I already knew who loved it, and then found Higher Levels on YouTube. Within about a month, I enrolled in Tech Sales Ascension, expensed it through professional development at work, and committed to making an internal move into sales.
What was the most valuable part of the program to you?
The biggest value was clarity and preparation. The course helped me understand what the sales career ladder actually looks like, what skills matter at the BDR level, and how to position myself correctly as a technical person transitioning into sales. It also gave me a repeatable way to prepare for ClickUp’s interview process and role plays, so there were no surprises. I learned to keep answers tight, guide conversations with intent, and shift my mindset from “cool features” to tying those features to business value and customer outcomes.

Network early and network aggressively, especially if you are trying to move internally. Talk to people in every role you can, because it de-risks the decision and helps you become the obvious candidate before interviews even start. Also, be willing to make a calculated short-term sacrifice for long-term upside. I took a 10–15K pay cut to move into an Enterprise BDR role because the promotion path and earning potential made the risk worth it. If you are on the fence, give yourself the best chance at success by learning from people who have already done it and then take the leap.
